The Beginning of my Final Major Project (March-April)

An introduction to Animation

Like many others in 2020, I began my Final Major Project in the midst of COVID-19 quarantine. I began my research with very little inspiration from the outside world, so technology and website platforms became my inspiration for what my project might become. I found myself watching a lot of animated TV programmes on Netflix, and I became particularly inspired by science-fiction TV shows such as Big Mouth (2019) and The Rick and Morty Show (2020). While watching these cartoons, I had began noticing that a lot of the jokes and situations in these shows actually feed the viewer some scientific knowledge, and I began thinking about how these sorts of comedic and crude shows could become a good platform to teach adults scientific information.

I began creating storyboards for my own animated TV series, which I called Globin and Randy. The idea behind the story was two anthropomorphic, microscopic cells called Globin (a blood cell) and Randy (a sperm cell) are living within a male human body. Different scenarios in the show would then form storylines to teach the viewer scientific facts.

This self dedicated project began my new found interest in animation. I had animated once before during one of my undergraduate illustration course modules. I didn't have a lot of experience using animation programmes nor the process of animation, so creating Globin and Randy really helped me to introduce myself to animation techniques. I began experimenting by putting hand drawn illustrations into Adobe Animate CC, and trying to make them move as smoothly as possible.

Other then Globin and Randy being a very rough and quickly put together animation, the scientific information within Globin and Randy is very inaccurate. I think with the correct guidance from a professional, this animation could have perhaps became something more, however I wanted to use my new animation skills to help create a comedic animation somewhere else within society. I wanted to be able to appeal to a wider audience and not to just create content for adult entertainment.
